12th Fail: Vikrant Massey’s film beats Barbie and Oppenheimer in global ratings

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod’s Chopra’s latest release, ’12th Fail’, has soared past all expectations and secured the top spot as the highest-rated Indian film on IMDb.

In the list of the top 250 Indian films on IMDb’ ’12th Fail’ has secured the coveted first position. It has surpassed the other four films in the top five Indian movies of all time, which include 1993 animated film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, Nayakan, Gol Maal, and actor R Madhavan’s directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.

With a score of 9.2 out of 10, it has also surpassed some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed blockbusters, including Barbie and Oppenheimer, in global ratings. Other movies it thrashed include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, John Wick: Chapter 4.

Adapted from Anurag Pathak’s book, the film showcases the inspiring and difficult journey of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme poverty to become an Indian Police Service officer. In a recent interview with Scroll, Vinod shared some insights about his thought process when making the film.

“This film isn’t just about education or small towns – it’s about never giving up. It’s also about relationships. While the idea is based on a real story, it is also based on many other real-life stories. There is a lot of me in it too. This film is about my journey from Kashmir to here. I have achieved all of this without selling my soul. That is what the film is saying.”
