Why are they here? Influencers attend the Ambani wedding; the internet reacts

Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s £250M wedding has been the talk of the town for months, capturing news stories from across the globe.

The lavish celebrations were attended by politicians, celebrities, businessmen and other prominent figures, from international sensation Kim Kardashian to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, the last day of the glamorous extravaganza saw the arrival of unexpected members of the guest list: content creators. A number of popular influencers and creators secured an invite to the wedding and shared glimpses of the dazzling celebrations with their followers:

Why are they here?

However, the presence of content creators left netizens feeling divided. While their devoted followers expressed delight and pride at their attendance of the event, many other online communities questioned why they needed to be there at all. This led to trolling, hate comments and growing skepticism about the Ambanis’ reputation.

A user on reddit wrote: “First Cannes and “First Cannes and now this…. I feel [like] these influencers actually pay to attend these events”. 

“Who are these people? I barely recognize anyone attending today,” another complained.

This dilemma was exacerbated still further with the allegations by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s daughter.

Aaliyah Kashyap, a popular social media influencer in her own right, recently accused the Ambanis’ PR of inviting other influencers only to promote the wedding online.

On a Reddit broadcast channel Gup Shup With Kashyap, Aaliyah claimed, “The Ambani wedding is not a wedding at this point, it’s become a circus.” 

She added, “I was invited to some events because apparently they’re doing PR (???? don’t ask me why) but I said no because I would like to believe I have a little more self respect than to sell myself out for someone’s WEDDING”.

The star kid continued, “I just find rich people’s life so fascinating … it’s like oh we have this extra money what should we do with it? Oh let’s call JUSTIN BIEBER.”

Reacting to her allegations, a user wrote: “It’s obvious they have PR.. but my question is why!? They don’t need image cleansing. They have nothing to gain out of curating an image.. financially that is. Why are they spending this kind of money and energy in making this a public event when this can be invested in more profitable ventures?”

With the rise of their popularity and recognition across several national and international platforms, their participation in mainstream events is inevitable and will likely increase still further in the future.

This recognition has been cemented by their attendance at the Ambani wedding, putting them on par with celebrities and politicians. Whether directly or indirectly, they also aided the Ambanis’ social media coverage of the glamorous celebrations by sharing posts with their followers.
