Gunda’s “Bulla” comes back to life in BoAt’s new Deadpool ad

“Audience shocked, Deadpool and Bulla rocked.”

BoAt has roped in “Bulla” from the 1998 flick movie Gunda to star in their latest ad.

While the name may not ring a bell for most modern audiences, “Gunda” will surely ring a code for cinephiles and movie enthusiasts of the 1990s. The masterpiece by Kanti Shah has attained a cult-like status in today’s world because of its over-the-top performance, good VS evil storylines, and cartoonish villains – particularly the fearsome and hated Bulla, infamous for his opening monologue “Mera naam hain Bulla. Rakhta hoon main khulla.” (My name is Bulla. I keep it open).

BoAt has now brought this controversial character back to life to make him unbox their new limited-edition airdopes for the upcoming movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which hits the cinema in a few days.

Mera naam hai Bulla. Unboxing karunga khullam kulla,” Bulla growled in the beginning of the ad, setting the tone for what was to come. Played by actor Mukesh Rishi, he re-used unforgettable dialogues from the original movie to highlight all the product features of the Airdopes Alpha Deadpool Collection, from its long battery life to audio clarity.

The ad has been conceptualized by Tanmay Bhatt and co.’s Moonshot, who leveraged the ongoing trend of using on-screen characters to promote advertisements. A particularly memorable example is the revival of Kareena Kapoor’s iconic character “Poo”, brought back as Bebo, in Goibibo’s 2023 October commercial. BoAt’s latest ad concept similarly attempted to invoke nostalgia while also giving modern audiences a refreshing glimpse of 1990s cinema.

The ad has received over 850,000 views till date on Instagram alone and has provoked comments that reflect netizens’ surprise, thrill and horror in equal measure. It was particularly well-appreciated by Marathi-speaking audiences who were comparatively much more familiar with the character of Bulla.
