Jonty Rhodes opens up about cricket, Rohit Sharma and BCCI in ‘Aleena Dissects’

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes has revealed the man behind the legend in a recent episode of Aleena Dissects.

From a celebrated player to an admired coach, Jonty Rhodes’ journey has been full of unexpected and inspiring transformations. Sitting down with Social Media Dissect’s founder and CEO Aleena, he shared exclusive insights on cricketing life and life beyond the cricket field.

From his iconic moments on the pitch to experiences in the world of sports and revelations on the evolving cricket industry, Jonty shared it all. Topics of discussion ranged from his legendary ‘Superman runout’ of Inzamam-ul-Haq to his reason for naming his daughter India.

“Mera naam Jonty Rhodes!”

One particularly memorable response that caught viewers’ attention was his hilarious response at missing the opportunity of becoming IND’s fielding coach.

Till about a month back, Jonty Rhodes was in the reckoning for the role, with reports suggesting he had the backing of India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir as well. However, Rhodes was denied the role by BCCI, which baffled him.

Yeah! Can you believe it? I mean, they didn’t want an international coach, and I’m so local. I mean, mera naam Jonty Rhodes! (I’m Jonty Rhodes) Come on. I’m based in Goa. Maybe because I’m based in Goa. Maybe I need to be in a metro (city),” The cricket legend said on the podcast.

“He hasn’t changed…’

Jonty Rhodes also opened up about working with Rohit Sharma in the Indian Premier League.

He hasn’t changed and that is so ridiculous. During my association with MI, I saw Rohit taking a few throw-downs in the nets or even getting involved in shadow-batting,” Rhodes revealed.

“Rohit didn’t practice as hard as Sachin Tendulkar, and I think he doesn’t have the best technique either,” he added.

Rhodes further revealed that Rohit Sharma has achieved success primarily due to his demeanor and his hand flow.

“He often gets slammed for not moving his feet in the crease, but he is so relaxed and his hands flow help him in scoring runs. It is great to see that he has stayed the same over the years.”
