Amazon Prime Video will introduce ads in movies, shows in India from 2025

Amazon Prime Video will begin showing limited advertisements on its shows and movies in India from 2025, the retail giant announced.

“We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear television (TV) and other streaming TV providers. We will also offer a new ad-free option and will share the price of that option at a later date,” the company stated.

This signifies the growing importance of global ad sales to streamers like Amazon and Netflix, who have gotten into the business of selling commercials to balance out the costs of content production over the past two years.

When making this announcement, Amazon confirmed that it is taking this measure in order to continue investing in “compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time”.

In March earlier this year, Prime Video announced its biggest India content slate yet, most of which will be launched over the next two years.

Notably, Amazon has highlighted that it will not make any changes to the price of Prime membership, which currently costs Rs 1,499, in 2025. This announcement will also not impact Prime Lite subscribers, who currently have access to Prime Video’s full library of content, on any single device (TV or mobile) in 720p High-Definition with ads.

“”We will email Prime members several weeks before ads are introduced into Prime Video with information on how to sign up for the ad-free option if they would like” Amazon stated.

Prime Video ads have already been made available in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, U.K. and the U.S. They will now also be rolled out in platforms across Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

All current regions offer customers the choice of an ad-free option, usually for an extra fee.
