YouTube tests it’s ad-supported ‘Premium Lite’ plan in select countries

YouTube is expanding its Premium Lite plan to select countries with a more affordable price point.

Unlike the full Premium subscription, ‘Premium Lite’ is a paid monthly subscription that still includes ads but fewer of them.

Previously, the plan offered ad-free viewing but didn’t include offline downloads YouTube Music, background playback, or any additional benefits. In contrast, the regular plan included those perks.

YouTube discontinued its ‘Premium Lite’ plan in many countries on October 25th, 2023, after piloting it for two years. The plan was initially introduced in Europe, covering Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.

Now, the plan has made an unexpected comeback. According to 9to5Google, the option has started to become more visible to more users in Australia and Germany.

Reportedly, while the plan works across devices as before, the key difference is that it limits ads rather than removing them completely. Google has also confirmed to Android Authority that it is currently testing a different version of Premium Lite, with users in Australia, Germany, and Thailand potentially seeing the option to sign up.

However, it remains unclear if YouTube will expand the option to other countries.

Meanwhile, in India, YouTube has revised and upgraded the pricing for its premium plans in August. The new rates reflect an increase in all prices, including Individual, Family, and Student subscriptions. The student plan, formerly Rs 79 per month, is now Rs 89 per month. The Family Plan price has risen from Rs 189 per month to Rs 299 per month, while the Individual Plan (one month) now costs Rs 159, up from Rs 139.
