Legendary actor Sanjay Mishra has revealed how he chooses his iconic movie roles and opened up about his time shooting Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.
Renowned for his standout performances in Office Office, Aankhon Dekhi, Golmaal, Dhamaal, and more, Mishra has amassed an enthusiastic fan-following across his decades-spanning career. Known for his memorable roles in both drama and comedy, he has also been the recipient of numerous awards and critical acclaim, including his recent Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for Vadh in 2022.
In a recent episode of Aleena Dissects, the actor opened up about several unknown aspects of his journey.
How does Sanjay Mishra Choose his Movie Roles?
When asked how he managed to perfectly balance his comedic roles with his solemn ones, Mishra answered that he did not work in movies based on a specific, long-thought-out plan. Instead, he left some things according to chance and external circumstances.
“There was a line in my mind that said, ‘This is the kind of work I want to do’,” he said, clarifying that his goals were generally more abstract than detailed or strategic. Moreover, he expressed his gratitude that he was fortunate to receive offers to work in the kind of roles he always wanted to do, a rare thing in this competitive industry.
Highlighting how he did not ever wish to be a part of the crowd, Mishra explained that this was because he wished to portray “the crowd” in his movies. Observing people from a distance instead allowed him to examine his roles critically, from a different angle, and perform them in a unique way.
Why does he Choose Supporting Roles in Films?
Mishra answered yet another burning question on everyone’s minds – why does he, as a popular and mainstream actor, choose supporting roles in his movies?
Comparing the situation to a beam from a building, he highlighted that all roles, regardless of their overall relevance to the plot, were vital to make a film succeed.
Moreover, sometimes it was not about the critical importance of the role: sometimes it was simply about the enjoyment and satisfaction of it all. Several of his audiences, including his own children, have enjoyed his performances, and that is what matters the most.
‘If you’re having fun, no logic is necessary,” he said.

When asked if we can expect anything different from his role in the latest installment of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise, Sanjay Mishra gave an unexpected answer.
He did not believe in telling an audience what to expect from his role, but instead preferred to hear their own feedback on it and their own opinions on why he performed it in the way that he did.
However, he confirmed that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 would be an enjoyable and memorable experience for all who watched it.
When talking about his experience shooting the film, Mishra highlighted the exceptional preference of his fellow cast and crew, particularly their iconic director Aneez Bazmee, who he regarded as an “actors ka god”.
