Instagram Announces Remix on Reels

01 April, 2021 (Thursday)

2020 has been a big year for Instagram and by the looks of it, they're not backing down anytime soon.

After Instagram's Reels reached massive popularity last year, Instagram decided to add another feature to it. Just like TikTok, Reels will now allow you to create your own reels alongside other creators' existing reels. This would permit users to respond to reels created by their friends, capture their own reactions to the latest trends, or remix their own reels even.

To remix a reel, tap the three-dot menu on the Reel and select 'Remix the Reel.'

The screen would then proceed to split with the original reel on the left and your recording on the right. You can record your reel or upload pre-recorded footage

You can also control the volume for the original audio and can even add a voiceover to it, along with other editing functions.

But here's the catch, you can only remix reels created from public accounts. Private accounts cannot enable their reels for remixing.

If you want your own reels to be remixed, make sure to inform your audience about it and include a call to action in your caption or by using text on your video.

Albeit reels posted post March 31st would automatically be available for remixing, reels before the said date - wouldn't. To be able to remix reels created before March 31st, you will need to individually enable 'Remix' on those reels.

If you're not a fan of Remix, you could disable it by tapping on the three-dot menu and tap 'Disable Remixing'.

Instagram believes that Remix Reel would do well within the Indian market majorly because of the TikTok ban that has been in place since June, 2020.

If this is anything to go by, Instagram is emphasizing that they're serious about making their short-form video permanent and making it into one of their USPs.
