An AI-powered robot has made history by donning the cap of a dentist and operating a live human’s teeth for the first time.
The dental robot was made by Boston-based startup Perceptive and has been approved by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). It is guided by artificial intelligence with 3D imaging software and operates a robotic arm to perform dental tasks.
The dental robot, made by Boston-based company Perceptive, has been approved by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). It is guided by AI (artificial intelligence) with 3D imaging software and operates a robotic arm to perform dental tasks.
The robot successfully completed a crown replacement procedure on a live human in just 15 minutes, which is eight times faster in comparison to a human specialist, according to the Daily Mail.
For carrying out this unique procedure, the mouth of the patient was first mapped using a 3D scanner before the operation was planned and carried out by an AI-powered robot autonomously. Thus, Perceptive accomplished the world’s first fully-automated dental procedure.
CEO and founder of Perceptive, Dr Chris Ciriello, said, “This medical breakthrough enhances precision and efficiency of dental procedures, and democratises access to better dental care, for improved patient experience and clinical outcomes.”
Perceptive is a startup that has raised a significant $30 million from investors, including Y Combinator, PDS Health, and Ed Zuckerberg, a noted dentist and father of Meta CEO and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg.
