Anu Malik has revealed how his time as a judge on Indian Idol, Sony TV’s singing reality competition, has changed his life.
“I think I use that platform to help people,” he said.
In a recent episode of Aleena Dissects, the legendary music composer opened up about his journey in the music industry. Harkening back to his own experience as a 14-year-old boy surrounded by successful composers, he revealed that it had been difficult for him to ask for work.
The advent of Indian Idol thus marked a refreshing change in the music landscape of India, widening the scope of success for the new generation.
He explained, “When Indian Idol came, the kids came to know that this is a platform where, if I sing well, there is Anu Malik here, there is all the judges there, and if someone likes me, I will get a chance.”
However, on a more personal level, Anu Malik’s tenure as a judge also offered him a golden opportunity to give back.
He recalled the story of a singer who had been ousted from the show and later came up to him, asking why they had thrown her out. After comforting her and praising her talent, the composer promised to work with her someday.
“When I worked with her, the song became a huge hit, and she got a national award,” he said.
Humming the lyrics out loud, Anu Malik revealed that the song was ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’, which was composed by himself, written by Varun Grover and sung by Papon.
“[Indian Idol] changed my perspective towards helping a lot of people,” he said.
Anu Malik also took the time to credit the ones who had given him a chance years ago and helped him carve out his own success in the industry, including FC Mehra, Manmohan Desai, Mahesh Bhatt, Farah Khan, and many more.
However, this were not Anu Malik only revelation in the episode. Sitting down with Aleena, founder and CEO of Social Media Dissect, the iconic composer opened up about his journey through the past four decades in the music industry. From his songwriting process to his ways of overcoming creative blocks, he discussed some of his biggest triumphs and tragedies, including the story behind his viral hit ‘San Sanana’ and the legacy he hopes to leave behind. He also reflected on the massive changes that have swept across the industry, providing a unique perspective on autotunes and highlighting the key difference between the nature of composing music in the past compared to today.
Anu Malik also opened up about his experience working with several Bollywood superstars, including the three Khans. From Salman Khan’s “swag” to Aamir Khan’s humility to Shah Rukh Khan’s evergreen cheerfulness, he gave viewers a rare and personal dimension to the world of fame and stardom.
