In a strategic boost ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, fitness influencer Rohit Dalal has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alongside fellow fitness enthusiast Akshay Dilawari and 70-80 other prominent sportspersons, including wrestlers and bodybuilders.
The announcement was made at AAP’s headquarters in Rouse Avenue, where Delhi Chief Minister and party leader Arvind Kejriwal personally welcomed the new members.
Arvind Kejriwal lauded the contributions of these athletes to society, highlighting their role in promoting fitness and representing India in international sports events. “Their dedication to health and fitness aligns with our vision of a stronger, healthier community,” he said.
Rohit Dalal, a celebrated name in the fitness industry, expressed his admiration for AAP’s initiatives in promoting sports and wellness across Delhi. “The party’s efforts, from free yoga classes to supporting gyms and sportspersons, resonate with my values. I am eager to contribute to this mission and help make a difference,” Dalal remarked.
The event also saw the participation of former cricketer Tilakraj, who joined the party alongside Dalal and Dilawari. Tilakraj emphasized the growing interest of sportspersons in politics, noting that many athletes from Delhi were planning to align with AAP. “Our goal is to work tirelessly and strengthen the party’s commitment to improving the lives of athletes and fitness enthusiasts,” he added.
As part of its focus on supporting sports and fitness, the Delhi government recently announced plans to establish a gymnasium association and enhance facilities for sportspersons. These initiatives are seen as part of AAP’s broader strategy to engage the sporting community and address their concerns.
However, challenges remain. Earlier this week, chess Olympiad gold medalist Tania Sachdev criticized the Delhi government for inadequate recognition of chess as a sport. In response, Chief Minister Atishi met with Sachdev, commending her achievements and promising more support for chess and other underrepresented disciplines.
With the Delhi elections fast approaching, AAP has finalized its list of candidates, contrasting with the BJP, which has yet to announce its lineup. The 2020 elections saw AAP achieve a landslide victory, securing 62 of the 70 assembly seats. This time, the party appears to be doubling down on its efforts to engage various community groups, including the fitness and sports sectors, to maintain its dominance.
As AAP continues to expand its outreach, the addition of fitness influencers and sportspersons like Rohit Dalal signals a clear intention to connect with Delhi’s youth and fitness-conscious population, potentially giving the party a significant edge in the upcoming elections
