At its annual “Made By Google” event, Google has announced the latest line of its homegrown “Pixel” smartphones, including the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
The tech giant has highlighted several dynamic new AI features that will debut with the Pixel 9 series and will be extended to previous-generation models via Pixel feature drop updates.
Major new features include:
Gemini Live:
According to Google, “Gemini Live lets you have a free-flowing conversation with Gemini — right from your phone or Pixel Buds. So whether you’re trying to plan a fun tailgate, need help thinking through household repairs, or want help brainstorming gift ideas, Gemini Live will offer a new level of help in a more intuitive, natural way.”
Gemini Live is ‘a personal assistant that is truly helpful’, offering human-like responses to users, who can interrupt it midway. To make these conversations more natural, Google is introducing 10 voices which users can choose from.
Gemini Live will be available to all Gemini Advanced subscribers.
Pixel Studio:
Google has described Pixel Studio as “a first-of-its-kind image generator. So now you can bring all ideas to life from scratch, right on your phone — a true creative canvas.” This tool is powered by combining an on-device diffusion model running on Tensor G4 and our Imagen 3 text-to-image model in the cloud.
It is expected to roll out to previous-generation Pixel smartphones in a few days.
Pixel Screenshots:
According to Google, “Pixel Screenshots, an exclusive app for Pixel 9, helps you save, organize and recall important information you want to remember for later.”
AI-powered weather app:
It is common for people to check the weather on their phones, and Google has used AI to make that process easier and more enjoyable.
“The Pixel Weather app is beautifully designed with super accurate weather forecasts. And Gemini Nano will generate a custom AI weather report to get you a sense of the day’s weather,” they said.
AI Call Recorder and Transcriber:
Powered by on-device AI capability, the Call Note Feature on the latest Pixel 9 series can record your calls and transcribe the same using AI to summarize it.
More Camera Improvements:
These updates include:
- A Magic Editor in Google Photos which has new editing capabilities to ensure you can get the shot you want.
- “Add Me” feature for group photos which enables users to add more people to a group photo by combining two pictures into one.
- Panorama, which has been rebuilt to give detailed shots even in low light. Google has claimed that “it’s the highest-quality low-light panorama on any smartphone.
