What did people search the most in 2024? Google’s annual “Year in Search” report reveals all the answers, rounding up the top search engine queries for this year.

The findings offered a valuable snapshot of what captured global attention in 2024, ranging from major sports events and iconic pop culture moments to controversial political elections.

This does not just include the most popular search terms for 2024, but rather what surged in popularity during the year. According to TechCrunch, it involved the queries which “had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2024 as compared to 2023.”

Sports Takes Center stage:

Sports events dominated global searches in 2024, with Copa América and the UEFA European Championship topping the Google list.

Cricket remained a major focus for sports fans in India and abroad. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was a popular search query, and the matches between India, England and Bangladesh topped the list of trending matches.

Athletes like Vinesh Phogat, Hardik Pandya, and Shahshank Singh were as top trending personalities in the sports category in India.

Politics and News Events Spark interest:

Political shifts and climate concerns fueled news trends on Google search. In particular, the US Election was one of the most searched news topics, alongside searches of excessive heat and Hurricane Milton.

In India, political engagement was particularly high during the Lok Sabha elections. The top trending “How to” search was “How to vote Lok Sabha”, with many seeking guidance on participating in the democratic process. 

India also expressed concern over air quality and health, with searches for “AQI near me” and “excessive heat” reflecting public interest in environmental and personal well-being. 

Entertainment Remains a Major Focus

Globally, Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” was the top trending movie of the year, while Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” dominated TV show trends.

In India, the situation was quite different. Stree 2 was the most searched movie of 2024, followed by iconic films like Hanuman and Kalki. On the television front, shows like Heeramandi and Mirzapur dominated search charts. International content is also rising in popularity for Indian users.

Memes and workplace culture rise in interest India:

Memes remain a popular part of India’s digital landscape in 2024. In particular, the Blue Grinch Knee Surgery meme gained viral status, along with lighter memes like the Hamster Meme and Very Demure, Very Mindful. The Orange Peel Theory, a meme related to relationships, also sparked widespread discussions.

Workplace humor also gained traction in India, with important searches for Gen Z Boss and Gen Z leave work email highlighting the changing professional landscape.

Which Travel Destinations were the Most Searched in India?

Travel searches in 2024 in India were led by Azerbaijan and Bali, while domestic travellers showed more of a preference for places like Manali and Jaipur.
