Instagram announced the launch of two new features on its application in an attempt to combat Clubhouse’s popularity. The two new features allow users the ability to silence their live audios, and the possibility of switching off their video when broadcasting it live.
Instagram, on Social Media Today, stated:
“We want to build on our Live product and offer even more ways for our creator community to drive serendipitous, engaging conversation with each other and their audience. By giving people the option to mute their audio or turn off their video, hosts will have the added flexibility for their live-stream experience, as the added functionality could help decrease pressure to look or sound a certain way while broadcasting live.”
The new controls can be seen at the bottom of the top-left video panel. Participants within a stream will be able to simply tap to switch off their audio or video and when the camera is off, the participant’s screen returns to the view of his profile.
These new features could help replicate the audio-social experience that Clubhouse offers. Broadcasting conversations with followers could attract more people on Instagram than a new crowd via a new audio app.
