Intel Lays Off 15,000 Employees, brings back Free Tea & Coffee to Boost Morale

After firing over 15,000 employees as part of its broader cost-cutting efforts, Intel plans to resume free coffee and tea in a bid to boost employee morale.

According to The Oregonian, the chip giant shared in an internal message that in-office beverages would soon be making a comeback.

“Although Intel still faces cost challenges, we understand that small comforts play a significant role in our daily routines,” the message, seen by The Oregonian, stated. “We know this is a small step, but we hope it is a meaningful one in supporting our workplace culture.”

However, the report also stated that free fruit, a perk that employees had come to expect, would not be returning.

Back in August, the company announced that it would slash around 15% of its workforce, aka 15,000 jobs, in order to recover from a series of stumbles. According to The Oregonian, Intel had already laid off 1,300 Oregon workers last month along with 1,000 others at sites in California, Arizona and Texas.

In the same month, the company also declared that several employee benefits would be slashed, including reimbursements for internet, phone, and travel costs.

Once a dominant leader in the tech industry Intel has been struggling to stay afloat for a while now. This is primarily due to its poor decision-making and setbacks it faced. Namely, its focus on personal computers has enabled its numerous missed opportunities, such as the mobile chip market in the 2000s. This has allowed apple to take the lead with its successful iPhones.

The news of Intel’s mass layoffs has sparked outrage across social media, with many expressing dissatisfaction and anger with the company’s lack of consideration for its employees. Many have also highlighted how this exposes the “myth” of job security and urged people of their age group to diversity their sources of income.
