“There is a limit.”
Reshma Sebastian, a popular fashion influencer from Kerala who was mistaken for deceased soldier Captain Anshuman Singh’s widow, Smriti Singh, has issued a clarification on social media.
Earlier this month, Smriti Singh had received the Kirti Chakra that was awarded to her husband posthumously. However, Sebastian, who was mistaken for Anshuman Singh’s widow by a large section of the internet, faced vicious trolling and backlash over her posts on fashion.
In particular, several social media users shared a video of a woman dancing to a Bollywood song and claimed that she was the widow of the Army officer, criticizing her for her alleged merriment less than a month after his death. Sebastian’s reels were falsely shared in the name of Smriti Singh, and spread across Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, among other social media channels.
Realizing this rising controversy, Reshma Sebastian took to social media to clarify her identity.
“This is not Smriti Singh’s (widow of Indian Army soldier Capt Anshuman Singh) page/ig account. Read the profile details and bio first. Please refrain from spreading false information and hate comments,” she said in the post.

Reshma Sebastian also shared a screenshot of a man’s Facebook post with her photo where he trolled the wife of the Army Officer and warned of legal action.
“This is absurd! Using my identity to spread false information about Smriti Singh. We are going ahead with legal actions,” she said.
Mistaken identities are a common occurrence across social media and have led to several similar incidents. This misunderstanding underscores the severity of the problem and serves as a helpful and much-needed reminder to double-check and clarify details of respective social media users before engaging in communication with or about them.
