In a recent episode of Aleena Dissects, Chirag took a deep-dive into this enigmatic and little-understood field, answering a vital question that has befuddled many – the difference between mentalism and magic.
“Mentalism is the art of reading minds,” Chirag revealed. “I say ‘art’ very mindfully because a lot of people think it’s got a lot to do with only psychology or only science. Those things are important, but at the end of the day, the commonality is the art form.”
“What’s different is that mentalism happens on a more psychological level – it’s me trying to read your mind. Magic happens on a more physical level, where I put an object in your hand, like a deck of cards, and it turns into a piece of glass. That’s magic. It’s more tactile, more touch-and-feel, and it really bends physical reality.”
“Mentalism is just magic of the mind, in other words,” he concluded.
When asked if he could truly read people’s minds, Chirag replied that he “could try”. Putting his phenomenal abilities to the test, he analyzed the behavior of multiple people in the room and correctly deduced their emotions, inferring both anxiety and trust.
However, Chirag took the time to highlight the sensitive approach that people must take to mind-reading, and how it should never be made into a “game”.
“I think the more you do this and the more you are around people, you feel what people feel around you more often than not,” he said. “I think it’s a great skill because it helps you be mindful of people’s emotions in the rightest sense rather than trying to make it a game about concept reading.”
However, this was not Chirag Jethwaney’s only revelation in the episode. Sitting down with Aleena, founder and CEO of Social Media Dissect, the renowned mentalist shared invaluable insights and tips on mind-reading, the psychology behind human behavior, and whether these skills are natural or can be learned. A much-needed guide for aspiring mentalists, he also revealed how mentalists make money, its career trajectory in India, and its impact on one’s personal life.
On a lighter note, while highlighting some memorable moments from his own performances, Chirag also indulged a memorable card trick, hypnotic Rubik’s cube tutorial, and a particularly mind-boggling session of mind-reading with Aleena.
