Maharashtra govt to roll out a new policy for billboards in Mumbai Metropolitan region

The Maharashtra government is set to introduce a new policy on hoardings in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), as announced by Minister Uday Samant in the legislative assembly on Monday.

“A policy will be unveiled once the code of conduct for the legislative council polls ends after the results are declared for the graduates and teachers constituencies,” the minister stated during a discussion about hoardings across the city that have been erected by violating rules.

This announcement comes in the wake of the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse incident on May 13th which killed over 17 people. The issue of hoardings was raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sunil Shinde through a Calling Attention Motion.

Giving more details about the investigations of the collapse, Samant emphasized that the committee headed by former Allahabad High Court chief justice Dilip Bhosle is probing the mishap. The Railways will reportedly be given instructions to follow the rules of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with regards to the size of hoardings on railway land as well.

“We already have the law for the hoardings but if there is any need to amend the law and make it more strict then we will do that as well,” he clarified.

Samant additionally stated that a fresh survey of hoardings will be carried out in 30 days and that any illegal hoardings will be removed.
