Meta’s Threads reaches 200 million users; is it growing fast enough?

Meta’s Threads have rapidly gained momentum since its launch and has reached a milestone of 200 million monthly active users.

The announcement of this news was shared by Adam Mosseri, a top company executive:

This significant growth comes just after the app’s launch. While the app may have benefitted considerably by Meta linking it to Instagram, active users and profiles in the two apps are nonetheless very different. Thus, Threads’ achievement is notable and suggests a continually upward trend in the future.

Notably, Threads’ growth rate has accelerated in the past few weeks, based on data usage shared by Meta:

Likely contributing factors include the beginning of the Olympics and increasing political discourse, namely regarding the upcoming U.S elections. There has been right-wing on X (formerly Twitter), which may have increasingly pushed users to seek alternatives in Threads, their growing rival.

Threads’ growth has been consistent since its launch. The app reached 100 million active users in October 2023 before rising to 130 million users in February 2024, just seven months after its launch. In April, the app reported 150 million users. Just last month, the app reported yet another major development with 175 million users.

At that time, Mark Zuckerberg expressed optimism about the app’s future and revealed his hope that Threads would become the next Meta app to reach 1 billion users.

Expanding the app’s user base will be crucial to monetize the platform, which currently lacks business models and top-notch advertising opportunities.
