Meta’s new AI model can translate and transcribe 100 languages

Leading tech giant Meta has introduced ‘SeamlessM4T’, an advanced AI translation and transcription model in up to 100 languages.

SeamlessM4T released on 22nd August, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to his Meta channel to announce the news, stating that “over time, we’ll integrate these AI advances in translation and transcription into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads”.

Meta’s groundbreaking model is the first all-in-one multimodal multilingual AI translation and transcription model. It covers both speech and text, performing speech-to-text, speech-to-speech, text-to-speech and text-to-text translations.

Seamless M4T has been publicly released by Meta under a research license, which will allow researchers and developers to build on it.

Meta’s interest and dedication to multilingual projects is evident in its previous endeavors. The company has formerly introduced No Language Left Behind (NLLB), demonstrated its Universal Speech Translator, and unveiled Meta’s Massively Multilingual Speech project earlier this year, which contributed to the development of their latest project. Now, the launch of SeamlessM4T demonstrates Meta’s ongoing commitment to enhancing effective communication across languages and cultures by improving AI-driven translation and transcription.
