Procreate takes a stand against Generative AI, the internet reacts

“Creativity is made, not generated.”

iPad design app Procreate has taken a strong stand against generative AI and has vowed to never introduce AI features into its products.

The company has highlighted its position on its website with a compelling statement:

“Generative AI is ripping the humanity out of things. Built on a foundation of theft, the technology is steering us toward a barren future. We think machine learning is a compelling technology with a lot of merit, but the path generative AI is on is wrong for us.

We’re here for the humans. We’re not chasing a technology that is a moral threat to our greatest jewel: human creativity. In this technological rush, this might make us an exception or seem at risk of being left behind. But we see this road less travelled as the more exciting and fruitful one for our community.”

Procreate’s stance comprises of three central points: their refusal to incorporate generative AI, their emphasis on your work belonging to you, and their pride in privacy.

CEO James Cuda has released an even more emphatic statement against the technology in a video posted to X:

I really f****** hate generative AI,” Cuda said in the video. “I don’t like what’s happening in the industry, and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists. We’re not going to be introducing any generative AI into our products. Our products are always designed and developed with the idea that a human will be creating something.”

Procreate’s firm stance has provoked widespread praise and admiration from the online community and digital artists, many of whom have criticized AI and are unhappy with the way other apps and companies have embraced the technology despite the cost to its harm to their employees and the lack of respect shown to artists.

Only time will tell if Procreate’s committed stance against AI will inspire other companies and agencies to do the same.
