Supreme Court Grants Relief to Ranveer Allahbadia Amid Controversy, Issues Strong Reprimand

YouTube personality Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as ‘BeerBiceps,’ has received partial relief from the Supreme Court regarding the controversy surrounding his remarks on parents and sex during an episode of India’s Got Latent.

While the court has protected him from further police complaints on the matter, it did not hold back in delivering a stern critique of his statements.

The Supreme Court ruled that no additional FIRs could be registered against Allahbadia beyond the ones already filed. It also directed the Maharashtra and Assam police to provide him protection if he faces threats to his life. However, in a precautionary measure, the court mandated that he deposit his passport with Thane police and prohibited him from leaving the country without permission. Additionally, he and his associates have been barred from participating in any further stand-up or roast-style comedy shows until further notice.

During the hearing, a bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh criticized Allahbadia’s remarks, questioning their appropriateness and societal impact. His lawyer, Abhinav Chandrachud, admitted he found the remarks personally distasteful but argued that the issue was whether they constituted a criminal offense.

Justice Kant, however, appeared unconvinced, exclaiming, “If this is not obscenity, then what is?” He went on to express concern over the content, stating that it spreads “something dirty in the minds of viewers.”

The court’s remarks underscored the widespread criticism Allahbadia has faced. Justice Kant rebuked him for the embarrassment caused to his family and society, questioning, “Who in the world would find such words acceptable?” He also noted that while other societies have content restrictions, Allahbadia seemed to disregard such considerations, assuming his popularity granted him the freedom to say anything.

Amidst this controversy, Allahbadia has reported receiving death threats, including a bounty placed on his head. He claims his family, including his mother’s medical clinic, has been targeted. Despite the hostility, he remains defiant, stating that while he fears for his safety, he will not back down.

Apart from Allahbadia, fellow comedians and influencers associated with the show—including host Samay Raina and participant Apoorva Makhija—are also facing legal scrutiny and threats. Additionally, the National Commission for Women has summoned Allahbadia for questioning, which he previously postponed due to security concerns.

While the Supreme Court has granted Allahbadia temporary relief, the broader debate about content regulation on digital platforms continues. The court has sought a response from the central government regarding guidelines for potentially obscene material on social media.

This case not only raises questions about the limits of free speech but also highlights the growing influence—and responsibility—of content creators in shaping public discourse. Whether this controversy will lead to stricter regulations remains to be seen
