The battle for readership began when TOI decided to enter The Hindu’s dominated position in the Chennai market. Without naming its competition, Times of India published an advertisement which said “Stuck with the news that puts you to sleep? Wake up to the Times of India.” In an attempt of its counter-strategy, The Hindu told its readers to ‘Stay Ahead of the Times’ by reading news that was relevant to current affairs instead of Bollywood and celebrity gossip.
