After the big news of the Government blocking major social media apps such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. lest they don’t comply with the new IT rules, Twitter seems to be the only app that hasn’t complied with all the new rules yet.
Twitter held out a plea that would require 3 months to be able to completely comply with all the rules but will not be receiving it.
Advocate Amit Acharya moved to Delhi High Court to urge the Center to pass necessary instruction to Twitter India and Twitter to appoint resident grievance officer according to the new IT Rules, 2021 after coming across “defamatory, false and untrue” tweets on Twitter made by two verified users.
Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Twitter, stated that the company already had a resident grievance officer in place (effective May 28th) as a response to the petition filed against Twitter.
Justice Rekha Palli listed the case for the next hearing on July 6 for both the Center and Twitter. The Court has also given the micro-blogging site 3 weeks in lieu of 3 months to comply with the new IT Rules, 2021.
The new rules notified in the Gazette of India on February 25 under the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021, came into effect from May 26.
Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Koo, Sharechat, Telegram, and LinkedIn have all complied with the new governing rules so far.
