X to get video and audio calls, announces Elon Musk

X is the effective global address book“.

X, formerly Twitter’s, owner Elon Musk has announced that the microblogging platform will soon get the ability to make video and audio calls.

He gave X users more details on his tweet, specifying that these new features will work on iOS, Android, Mac & PC, and that no phone number will be needed.

This was not the first time X users heard of this development. Musk had previously spoken of a potential calling feature earlier in May, stating that: “Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number.”

Nor was Musk the only one to hint at this possibility. X designer Andrea Conway hinted the same in a post earlier this month, posting: “just called someone on X”.

X Ceo Linda confirmed the same just days earlier in an interview with CNBC. “Think what has happened since the acquisition,” she said, and added: ““You look at video, and you will soon be able to make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform.”

With this incoming update, X has taken yet another step in the direction towards becoming the “everything app” that Elon Musk wants it to be. However, only time will tell if these features will be implemented successfully and if X’s massive user base is receptive to using them.
