YouTube removed music by Adele, Nirvana and more amid copyright dispute with SESAC

YouTube previously removed some of its most iconic music from the platform over the past few days, including popular track by Adele, Green Day and Nirvana, among others.

Instead, has been replaced by a short message:

“Video unavailable

This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country.”

This is due to the fact that YouTube is currently embroiled in a copyright dispute with the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers (SESAC). According to a report from Rolling Stones, the publishing deal between the two has expired, and a huge swath of videos are thus being impacted.

The publishing deal between SESAC and YouTube is due to expire shortly, according to a report from Rolling Stone, and a huge swath of videos are being impacted.

“We have held good faith negotiations with SESAC to renew our existing deal,” said a YouTube spokesperson, per a report from Variety. “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach an equitable agreement before its expiration.”

The statement added, “We take copyright very seriously and as a result, content represented by SESAC is no longer available on YouTube in the US. We are in active conversations with SESAC and are hoping to reach a new deal as soon as possible.”

However, as per Monday, it was announced that YouTube had a new deal with SESAC and that the songs would soon be restored.

““We’re pleased that SESAC reconsidered our offer. We’ve reached a deal and content will come back up shortly. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this time,” a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement to Variety.

The videos are thus back on YouTube.
