Zara apologizes amid backlash for Gaza-linked campaign

Fashion giant Zara has issued a public apology for its advertisement campaign that provoked controversy and outrage on social media.

The campaign featured statues wrapped in white, bearing troubling similarities to the corpses in shrouds from Gaza, under attack from Israel’s ongoing genocide. Pro-Palestinian activists called for a global boycott due to its insensitivity and exploitation of tragedy for its own commercial gain, leading to the hashtag #BoycottZara trending across social media, including Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).

Amid worldwide calls for a boycott, Zara took to Instagram to “clarify” the situation.

However, Zara’s apology was less than satisfactory to many users, with many pointing out the generic tone and lack of specifics in their post nullified any “apology” of theirs.

“Not buying until I see you posting the Palestinian flag with the caption #ceasefire. You put yourself in this place, until then, farewell Zara,” A user wrote.

Additionally, many users questioned Zara’s claims, pointing out the poor timing with which they rolled out the campaign, and the insensitivity to the ongoing genocide against Palestinians. Furthermore, users have emphasized the use of Uyghur Muslim prison labor in China, which Zara continues to exploit and benefit from.

Additionally, sports brand Puma has decided to end its sponsorship of Israel’s football team. While Puma claimed that the termination was made for financial reasons, many associated with the pro-Palestinian BDS boycott campaign have declared it a historic win for the movement.
